WPI is organizing the Dickens Symposium to honor Robert D. Fellman. Worcester Polytechnic Institute is the new home of the Robert D. Fellman Dickens Collection, which features first editions and part publications of nearly all of Dickens's major works, eight autograph Dickens letters, letters from Dickens's contemporaries, complete runs of periodicals edited by Dickens, and the unique Council Attendance Book for the Guild of Literature and Art, signed by Dickens more than 30 times. The collection also includes many valuable secondary sources and art objects.
A special exhibition of rare materials held by the American Antiquarian Society (including the results of Dickens's 1842 phrenological examination) is planned, as is a tour of Worcester's celebrated Mechanics Hall, where Dickens performed in 1868.
Papers on all topics relating to Charles Dickens are welcome. Please send completed 20-minute papers or 2-page proposals to Professor Joel J. Brattin (jjb@wpi.edu), Department of Humanities and Arts, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA 01609-2280 by 31 March 1996.
