５　メーリング・リストへの参加





その昔、ラジオ講座の先生が「継続は力なり」と言っておられましたが、このことは英語学習にももちろん当てはまります。一般的に言って、日本人の英語力は大学入試の日をピークに、それ以後は坂道をころがるように低下していきます。それは、高校時代に英語の授業が毎日のようにあったのに、大学では合格という最大のモーティベーションを失い、ほとんど予習をすることもなく毎週１コマか２コマの英語の授業をいやいや受けているのですから、無理もないことです。大学生であれ社会人であれ、英語学習を少しの時間でもいいから毎日持続させるためには、自分に最も関心があるトピックを扱った英語のメーリング・リストに加入 (subscribe) するのが一番いいと思います。毎日コンピュータに向かって、自分のメール・ボックスをチェックすることが何よりも楽しみになれば、しめたものです。そうなるためには、ただ受動的にリストの会員のメールを読むだけでなく、会員の反応を引き出すことができるような投稿を自らできる、そういう自信が持てるトピックのリストを探し出す必要があります。


ありがたいことにウェッブ上にはメーリング・リストを検索できるサイトが幾つかありますので、実際に探してみましょう。最初に挙げた Liszt では、枝分かれしたディレクトリから探すこともできます。

あるいは、"AltaVista" や "Yahoo" といった有名なサーチ・エンジンで、もっとトピックを絞って検索してもいいでしょう。たとえば、サッカーのファンでイングランド・プレミアリーグの覇者 Manchester United に一番の関心があるとすれば、"Manchester United Mailing List" を打ち込んで検索すれば、目的のサイトへ直接アクセスできます。


中学生や高校生の場合、実際問題として、海外にある英語のメーリング・リストへ登録させ、単独でメールのやりとりをさせることは、英語のレベルが違うので、かなり難しいと思います。しかし、K-12（幼稚園から小学６年）やハイスクール用のリストがありますし、ウェッブ上には子供による子供のためのホームページ（たとえば、"World Kids Network") があり、そこでリストが幾つか運営されていますので、こちらの方に参加させてはいかがでしょうか？個人的には、自分のクラス専用のメーリング・リストを開設（次章を参照）し、そこに生徒を参加させた方が、より効果的だと思います。

メーリング・リストの英語


フォーマルな英語を書くかどうかは、普通の電子メールと同じです。それが親しい仲間だけのリストか、公けのリストであるかの違いです。ここでは、フォーマルなメーリング・リストで見られる表現を列挙してみます。
